General Information

 

Modimolle, formerly Nylstroom, is situated in the Waterberg region of the Limpopo Province, South Africa, and is located approximately 135km north of Pretoria. The name Nylstroom comes from the river, the Nile (Nyl). The village of Nylstroom was laid out on a farm in February 1866. Today the town of Nylstroom has been renamed Modimolle after the prominent hill closeby which the local tribes regard as their holy mountain.  Modimolle means 'the spirits have eaten' relating to the tradition of the local tribesman offering food to the ancestors.

 

This is a medium-sized town that focuses primarily on agriculture and farming (citrus, grapes and cattle) as well as wildlife and is a beautiful tourism destination. There is a variety of restaurants that cater for all tastes and budgets.  

 

The Nyl floodplain and the Nylsvley Nature Reserve is a must-see for tourists. This large wetland is situated between Modimolle and Mookgophong and is home to the largest collection of water birds in the southern hemisphere. The reserve is open to day visitors as well as campers.

Modimolle, voorheen Nylstroom, is geleë in die Waterbergdistrik van die Limpopo Provinsie, Suid-Afrika, en is ongeveer 135km noord van Pretoria geleë.  Die naam Nylstroom is afkomstig van die rivier, die Nyl. Die dorp Nylstroom is in Februarie 1866 op 'n plaas uitgelê. Vandag is die dorp Nylstroom vernoem na Modimolle die prominente heuwel wat die plaaslike stam as hul heilige berg beskou. 

 

Modimolle beteken 'the spirits have eaten' wat verband hou met die tradisie van die plaaslike stam wat kos aan die voorvaders bied.

 

Dit is 'n medium grootte dorpie wat hoofsaaklik fokus op landbou en boerdery (sitrus, druiwe en beeste) sowel as wildlewe en is 'n pragtige toerisme bestemming. Daar is 'n verskeidenheid van restaurante wat voorsiening maak vir alle smake en begrotings.

 

Die Nyl-vloedvlakte en die Nylsvley-natuurreservaat is 'n gewilde toeriste aantreklikheid. Hierdie groot vleiland is geleë tussen Modimolle en Mookgophong en is die tuiste van die grootste versameling watervoëls in die suidelike halfrond. Die reservaat is oop vir dagbesoekers sowel as kampeerders.
