
Modimolle, formerly Nylstroom, is situated in the Waterberg region of the Limpopo Province, South Africa, and is located approximately 135km north of Pretoria. The name Nylstroom comes from the river, the Nile (Nyl). The village of Nylstroom was laid out on a farm in February 1866. Today the town of Nylstroom has been renamed Modimolle after the prominent hill closeby which the local tribes regard as their holy mountain. Modimolle means 'the spirits have eaten' relating to the tradition of the local tribesman offering food to the ancestors.
This is a medium-sized town that focuses primarily on agriculture and farming (citrus, grapes and cattle) as well as wildlife and is a beautiful tourism destination. There is a variety of restaurants that cater for all tastes and budgets.
The Nyl floodplain and the Nylsvley Nature Reserve is a must-see for tourists. This large wetland is situated between Modimolle and Mookgophong and is home to the largest collection of water birds in the southern hemisphere. The reserve is open to day visitors as well as campers.
